A good hat needs no explanation. Knowing where the work went is still worth something.
Indie pink was pulled down three steps in saturation and stopped exactly where the red stops rising. Take pink a shade deeper and it flushes the face; a shade paler and it disappears into the skin. The gap between those two is narrower than you would think.
The underbrim is a separate colour, chosen so the light bouncing off it adds a tone to the face — using a different cloth inside is closer to lighting than to decoration. The other three were set by the same test. The block lettering on the front and the woven label inside stay in the same place whatever the colour.
