Raised stitching, and the shadow it throws
Script embroidery goes flat unless the thread is built up.

A good hat needs no explanation. Knowing where the work went is still worth something.
An extra underlay is laid first and covered over, so the letters lift off the cloth and throw a shadow to one side. The height of embroidery is set by what goes underneath it, not by the weight of the thread on top. It is the kind of detail that shows more in the hand than in a photograph: on a screen it is white lettering, in the hand you can feel each stroke and watch the thickness change as you turn it.
The 55 on the side is kept small and pressed down, so it never competes with the front — put two marks at the same volume on one cap and both disappear. All four colours were chosen at the darkness where the script lifts most clearly.
