The shade thrown by the wide brim tidies the angle of the face, and the jaw reads cleaner in a photograph. Shade is a stronger tool than people expect: the wider the brim, the less light falls across the cheekbones, and the longer the vertical of the face reads. That is why the straw was chosen — paper straw is one of the few materials that can build shade without building weight.
The band is woven with its texture left standing so it does not slide on the forehead, and velcro takes it in to your own head. Roll it into a bag and the pleats come back exactly as they were. This is a hat made for the side pocket of a suitcase.
